PRINTERS’ INKS: NEW ART MEDIUM

ARTISTIC PROFILE

Native of Old Quebec and living in the heart of our World Heritage city, the arts have coloured my life on a daily basis. Mingling with the artists of the rue du Trésor in the Latin Quarter has been a great source of pleasure for years.

As a result of my studies in art at the CEGEP de Ste-Foy in 1982, I dabbled in water colours from 1980 to 1986 and then in acrylics before mastering oils. In 1993 however, perhaps inspired by my work and personal experiences, I discovered and fell in love with printers’ ink.

Throughout the years, I have had the privilege of successively studying painting with Jacques Laberge in 1982-1983, Sister Claire Thibault – I.A.G. in 1984-1986, Marthe MacLeod in 1987- 1988 and Georgette Pihay – I.A.F. AMSA in 1989.

As of 1982, my artistic evolution  was critiqued and directed by Gérard Zannetin,  mentor to numerous Quebecois artists.

At the INTERNATIONAL GALA of Visual Arts, Salle Pierre Mercure du Centre Pierre Péladeau, I was awarded a mention of honour by the jury of the Official Committee for Bursaries, CERCLE DES ARTISTES PEINTRES ET SCULPTEURS DU QUÉBEC.

After seeing my work, Mr. Daniel Leblond, an arts doctorate, invited me for a solo exhibition at the Centre de Créativité du Gésu, salle Jean-Claude Sawyer in Montreal. To this day, I enjoy his counsel through occasional exchanges about my research which he encourages.

More recently, with three other artists in Quebec, I have founded a group of painters under the name of Groupe Traits-Arts and each month we meet to discuss and comment on the evolution of our work.

What attracts me to art is the creative spark which allows me to personify and bring paintings to life.

My paintings are spontaneous renditions of prearranged compositions. My inspiration springs from my subconscious and this helps me to detach myself from conventions to express the language of colour, light and shape in symbols that define my essence.

I try to make viewers feel the intensity of my work in a way that opens a window on the world.

I construct and visualize images inside before letting them out on canvas. I feel and depict a tree swaying in the wind, a flower, a cloud… the finished painting is within me. I feel its life, its shape, its strength, its balance. I live with these elements until they are born of my creativity.

The reasons for which I use printers’ inks are numerous:

-         I enjoy the textures and infinite possibilities of colour mixtures

-         I enjoy the light and the brilliance of tints in this medium

-         They allow me to explore different forms: constantly evolving and living sculptures

-         The blessing of gold, silver and copper hues

Through the layering of inks, I paint, sculpt and engrave. The result: themes, emotions, currents that colour my works through the omnipresence of light which gives shape to objects and animates my compositions.

I want to innovate with inks to reveal my inner states on the canvas while at times expressing either joy, emotions or beauty.

My medium becomes a window on what the eye does not see at first glance, a journey into a world of dreams and perceptions. In 1995, Mr. Sam Aberg, writer, historian and art critic described my paintings as ‘endowed subconciousism’ .

During recent studies in Paris and London, I had the pleasant surprise of noticing the similarity of my work with the works of European artists that are described as being part of a ‘figurative contemporary’ movement.

My passion for art keeps growing and evolving with the years. My exploration starts where words alone cannot express the harmony and ideals which unite people in their quest and appreciation of beauty.
